Our first session at Laurel Elementary was a home run!
To all my friends throughout Menlo Park,
It is with great sadness that at this time Gorilla Play Day is on an indefinite hiatus. I have recently been hospitalized for an extended period, and may need to be again soon. Therefore, I am unable to guarantee that I will be able to provide your kids with all the fun and games they have come to expect week after week at GPD. I am hoping that with the course of antibiotics, and possible surgery ahead, that I will be up to snuff by early 2018, but until such time, there will be no after school programs or holiday camps.
My most sincere gratitude and apologies to everyone who have been writing me to inquire about Gorilla Play Day. I hope to be able to serve you and your children in the not-too-distant future!
All the best,
“Teacher Chris” Ortez
The types of games played include:
Some traditional sports like soccer, field hockey, wiffle ball, basketball
Playground games like capture the flag, and dodge ball
(soft “gator skin” balls and no hitting above the chest)
Tag/chase games like sharks & minnows, and freeze tag
Obstacle courses, races and relays, tug-o-war, parachute games,
Some tumbling and gymnastics sprinkled in
Most weeks will have a theme and the games and activities are selected for that week to support the theme (e.g. Olympics Week with out take on the games). Where applicable, the kids will be separated by grade levels into appropriate groups. We practice positive discipline when needed and treat every child with respect and as an individual.
The Gorilla approach is mostly fun-based with an emphasis on collaboration rather than competition. Our goal is fitness disguised as fun.
